CBD and the Endocannabinoid System
WHAT IS THE ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM?
After thousands of years of modern civilization, it’s fascinating to now know humans and animals alike have developed a system within our bodies to absorb and benefit from the use of cannabis and the active molecules, vitamins and nutrients found inside the plant. The two major players in this system are CBD and the Endocannabinoid System or as we would like to refer to it as the “ECS”. We also now know that CBD is just one of hundreds of cannabinoids found predominantly in the hemp plant. Over the last 20 years we have been able to research and develop systematic ways of tracking how our body uploads and processes these vital compounds throughout our bodies endocannabinoid system, and miraculously this all starts developing while we are still just infants growing in our mother’s womb!
HOW DO CANNABINOIDS WORK IN THE BODY?
The human body organically and naturally accommodates cannabinoids. Not only does the human body already make cannabinoids in small amounts, but they also occur throughout nature. Many plants have cannabinoids in them, not just cannabis hemp products. However, no other plants have them in as significant concentrations. Therefore, cannabinoids are not foreign substances our bodies aren’t designed to interact with or handle in large amounts.
While CBD is a hemp plant-based cannabinoid (phyto-cannabinoid), our bodies also naturally produce cannabinoids, known as endo-cannabinoids. These endocannabinoids are part of our internal regulatory system called the “endocannabinoid system”. The endocannabinoid system is a biological system composed of endocannabinoids (cannabinoids naturally produced in the body), enzymes that synthesize and degrade cannabinoids, and cannabinoid receptors (primarily CB1 and CB2) found throughout the body and predominantly in the central and peripheral nervous systems.
In 1988 several scientists by the name of Allyn Howlett and Dr. William Devane at the St. Louis University School of Medicine found that the mammalian brain has receptors that indeed react to the cannabis plant. These receptors would eventually be deemed the most abundant neurotransmitter receptor in the human body. The Endocannabinoid System was only just recently discovered in 1992 by American Dr. William Devane and Dr. Lumin Hanus at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. By studying the receptors they started to notice an interaction between the body and the system where these receptors were most abundantly found. By researching endocannabinoids and phytocannabinoids (body vs plant) they discovered a molecular signaling system, this system would eventually become known as the Endocannabinoid System
THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM & CANNABINOIDS
Just as we have a nervous system, respiratory system, and digestive system, we also have biological endocrine systems in our bodies. The endocrine system lies throughout the entire body in a series of glands. These glands control many different bodily functions — including but not limited to appetite, early growth, mood, and even sexual arousal. How do they do this?
The endocrine system includes several components, including glands that regulate and produce hormones. These hormonal signals are the backbone of the endocrine system. They are how the endocrine system regulates itself and affects other systems in the body. Cannabinoids interact with the endocrine system through endocannabinoid receptors found in the entire body. These endocannabinoid receptors naturally occur in every mammal.
When we ingest large amounts of cannabinoids through hemp products, those cannabinoids merge with the endocannabinoid receptors in our bodies. Different cannabinoids affect people differently, depending on what endocannabinoid receptors they bind with and what tissues in the body those cannabinoids affect.
THE ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM
The ECS system is a grouping of millions of receptors found throughout our body. Almost every organ of our body, including our skin and digestive tract, contain cannabinoid receptors but these are mostly found in the metabolic and nervous system. That’s why these receptors are primarily clustered together and found within the brain and central nervous system. The main purpose of the endocannabinoid system is to maintain homeostasis in the body. Homeostasis is our body’s way of regulating itself, it’s the internal balance, the ying and the yang, the ebb and flow that creates well being within ourselves. When one element becomes irregular and starts to alert us that we have an issue the endocannabinoid system jumps into overdrive to heal and create homeostasis and balance. The discovery of the endocannabinoid system has significantly advanced our understanding of health and disease. This naturally occurring system is responsible for the psychological and physical effects of the cannabis plant and its plethora cannabinoids that the plant inherently creates.
WHAT DOES CBD MAKE YOU FEEL?
CBD oil is a non-psychoactive compound known for supporting overall wellness in humans and pets. CBD is being widely adopted by health enthusiasts around the globe for supporting cellular and molecular health. There are dozens of potential uses for the calming, focusing, and anti-inflammatory properties of organic full-spectrum CBD oil.
It may help you maintain focus, promote a sense of calm and wellbeing, help your body’s natural ability to cope with stress (internal and external), recover from exercise-induced inflammation, support natural sleep cycles, and more.
WHAT MAKES MARIJUANA DIFFERENT FROM HEMP?
It comes down to the cannabinoids! When you look into the regulation of hemp versus marijuana and their history, the dividing line in the plants is all about cannabinoids. Before science could discern individual cannabinoids properly, lawmakers grouped the two plants. In recent years, we see a different regulatory system in the United States for hemp versus cannabis.
