Frequently Asked Questions
What is CBD and and how does it differ from THC?
CBD, short for Cannabidiol, is one of more than a hundred identified “phytocannabinoids,” which are unique to the cannabis family and endow the plant with its robust therapeutic profile. The CBD cannabinoid is non-psychoactive and the extract is derived from an organic compound formed within the oil of the plant itself. As the most predominant and well-known cannabinoid found in hemp, CBD has been gaining attention over the past few years for its numerous benefits.
While both hemp and marijuana are forms of cannabis it is important to remember that the term ‘cannabis’ does not specifically mean marijuana.
Hemp and Marijuana are two different varieties of cannabis that come from the same species of plant, Cannabis Sativa. Despite this fact, they have a very different genetic profile with different effects. Delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, is one of the most well-known and studied cannabinoids found in marijuana due to its psychoactive effects. The hemp plant is a different strain of cannabis that contains high concentrations of CBD throughout stem, leaves, and buds. If a hemp plant contains more than 0.3% THC, it is then technically defined as a “marijuana” plant. Our CBD-based products are extracted from the industrial hemp plant and are rigorously tested to confirm there are under 0.3% THC in every product we carry.
CBD and THC act in very different ways on receptors in the endocannabinoid system that each of us naturally contain. Many people want the health benefits of cannabis without the psychoactive ‘high’ effects of THC. The fact that CBD is therapeutically potent as well as non-intoxicating, makes it an appealing treatment option for those who are cautious about trying cannabis products.
How does CBD work?
CBD and THC interact with our bodies in a multitude of different ways. One of the main ways they impact our bodies is by mimicking and augmenting the effects of the compounds in our bodies called “endogenous cannabinoids” named because of their similarity to the compounds found in the cannabis plant. These “endocannabinoids” are part of a regulatory system called the “endocannabinoid system” CBD interacts with our bodies in a variety of ways.
All cannabinoids, including CBD, produce effects in the body by attaching to certain receptors. The human body produces certain cannabinoids on its own. It also has two receptors for cannabinoids, called the CB1 receptors and CB2 receptors. CB1 receptors are present throughout the body, but many are in the brain. The CB1 receptors in the brain deal with coordination and movement, pain, emotions, and mood, thinking, appetite, and memories, and other functions. CB2 receptors are more common in the immune system. They affect inflammation and pain.
Researchers once believed that CBD attached to these CB2 receptors, but it now appears that CBD does not attach directly to either receptor. Instead, it seems to direct the body to use more of its own endocannabinoids. It is important to understand that unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD does not interact strongly with the two cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2). This is why CBD does not cause psychoactive ‘high’ effects. CBD actually inhibits the enzymes that break down endocannabinoids, leading to an increase in our body’s naturally produced endocannabinoids, which brings our entire system to homeostasis. This natural increase also occurs in all vertebrates, making CBD useful, safe and effective for all of our beloved pets too!
What is the Endocannabinoid system?
While CBD is a plant-based cannabinoid, our bodies also naturally produce cannabinoids, known as endocannabinoids, as mentioned above. These endocannabinoids are part of our internal regulatory system called the “endocannabinoid system”. The endocannabinoid system is a biological system composed of endocannabinoids (cannabinoids naturally produced in the body), enzymes that synthesize and degrade cannabinoids, and cannabinoid receptors (primarily CB1 and CB2) found in the central and peripheral nervous systems. This system is a grouping of millions and millions of receptors found throughout our body. Almost every organ of our body, including our skin and digestive tract, contain cannabinoid receptors. These receptors are primarily clustered and found within the brain and central nervous system. The main purpose of the endocannabinoid system is to maintain homeostasis in the body.
The discovery of the endocannabinoid system has significantly advanced our understanding of health and disease. This naturally occurring system is responsible for the psychological and physical effects of the cannabis plant and its plethora of cannabinoids.
What is full spectrum hemp extract?
The most abundant cannabinoid found in our hemp oil is cannabidiol (CBD), a non-psychoactive compound shown to have many benefits in independent studies. Our hemp oil also contains the cannabinoid cannabidiolic acid (CBDa). Other major cannabinoids found in full-spectrum include cannabigerol (CBG), tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), and cannabinol (CBN).
What is Broad Spectrum CBD?
Broad-spectrum hemp extract contains all of the beneficial phytocannabinoids we love, including cannabidiol (CBD) but excludes THC.
Broad-spectrum CBD starts out as a full-spectrum extract with all of hemp’s beneficial properties, such as terpenes and all present cannabinoids, then goes through a remediation process to remove the THC. This means there are absolutely no toxifying effects. Simply put, broad-spectrum hemp extract is full-spectrum hemp extract without the THC.
Proper Canna Naturals proudly offers broad-spectrum products for customers who are looking for all of the beneficial properties of full-spectrum CBD, without the psychoactive compound of THC.
